Breast enlargement is a serious surgery with many potential complications. We answer the most common questions.
The basics about breast enlargement surgery. The more you know about what to expect, the better prepared you are.

History of Breast Enlargement

Are you considering getting breast enlargement surgery? If so, you should do some research on the history of breast enlargement. Why is this important? Because, it helps you to understand the advances in surgical techniques over the years and the potential complications that are associated with this procedure. Knowledge is the key to ensuring you make the right decision regarding your breast enlargement surgery.

Early Breast Enlargement Surgery

The early days of breast enlargement were clouded with poor judgment and many mistakes. The first breast enlargement surgery was performed in 1890 with paraffin injections into the breast. This led to lumps in the breast and many other complications. By the 1920’s, paraffin injections fell out of favor with medical experts.

After paraffin injections, surgeons tried to use fatty tissue. They believed the fat would give the breasts the natural look and feel of real breasts. Unfortunately, the body would reabsorb the fat, leaving the breast badly misshapen. This procedure was abandoned by the 1940’s.

In the 1960’s silicone injections were tried. These weren’t the type of silicone implants we’re all familiar with. This was silicone injected directly into the breast. This procedure led to inflammation, infection, lumps, and an array of other complications. In short, it was a shoddy procedure that produced unsatisfactory results.

History of Breast Implants

In the 1980’s silicone breast implants were withdrawn due to numerous safety concerns. Many women had reported suffering illnesses caused by their implants. The FDA disapproved of the implants, and they fell out of favor for the next couple decades.

Saline Implants

During this time, saline filled implants became popular. Saline implants were deemed to be the safest, most effective breast enlargement on the market. Even today, saline breast implants remain the most commonly used in surgical procedures.

Silicone Implants

In 2006, the FDA finally re-approved the use of silicone implants in breast enlargement surgery. The new implants featured improved safety and realistic texture. Since 2006, silicone implants have risen in popularity considerably.

Remember, even though the history of breast enlargement has helped develop better procedures and safer breast implants, there are still many potential complications associated with this procedure. Always ask your doctor about potential risks before agreeing to have surgery.
